Page / Process / Proceed I
August 2022, Glasgow
Page / Process / Proceed was a textual score-based project initiated in Glasgow. The project featured artists Jiyoon Lee, Theo Hynan-Ratcliffe, Ali Farrelly and Esyllt Lewis. The different stages of the project included a publication, an exhibition and a postal project.
The project aimed to explore how language can extend from the page through the activation of a durational, text-based score, drawing attention to process and experience. It embraced experimentation, unknowing and mistakes. It was an opportunity for artists to engage with production without the pressure of creating fully realised or ‘finished’ work. Additionally, it explored the curatorial possibility of the score as a framework and a mode of creative production.
Starting with one box of items and a list of instructions, each artist was given a week with the contents. During this time they were asked to respond to a textual score and record their process using a shared camera with a finite amount of images. After this stage the photographs were compiled in a publication and Theo Hynan-Ratcliffe wrote a text in response. The publication launch was held in Good Press, Glasgow with an accompanying exhibition if the photos, displayed on the windows of the space. Additionally there were instructions left in the space for attendees to complete.
One copy of the publication was used in an ongoing mailing project. This copy is passed from reader to reader via the post. It has perforated pages which allows for the book to deconstruct over time.
